Marching Season Officially Opened

The opening of the marching season of the Canterbury centre of the New Zealand Marching Association was held at Rugby Park, Kaiapoi, yesterday before a large crowd. Strong gusts of a north-west wind made conditions unpleasant at first but this did not deter the 31 teams from taking part in a street march to begin the afternoon, assisted by the Kaiapoi and Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Brigade Brass Bands and the Christchurch Metropolitan Highland Pipe Band. At Rugby Park, after the president of the Canterbury centre (Mr V. A. Austin) had welcomed the teams and visitors, the Mayor of Kaiapoi (Mr 0. M. Williams) officially declared open the marching season in Canterbury.
