ATTACK ON OFFICER
Police Arrest Youth
A traffic officer was assaulted and knocked unconscious at the Skew bridge, on the road between Kaiapoi and Southbrook, yesterday afternoon. He sent a .radio message to the Transport Department headquarters in Christchurch saying that he had been knocked o.ut, but became unconscious again before he could give his position. The traffic officer, 'Harry Nelson Jones, of Rangiora, was admitted to the Princess Margaret Hospital suffering from concussion, bruises, and shock. His condition was reported last evening as satisfactory. A radio message was sent to Traffic Officer J. Ross to search for Traffic Officer Jones. Traffic Officer Ross was at Chaneys corner when a youth spoke to him. They went to the Skew bridge, where Traffic Officer Jones was found in a very groggy condition. Traffic Officer Ross drove him to the Christchurch Hospital, after he had been examined by Dr. C. F. McKee. The youth was arrested by Constable J. J. Highsted, of Kaiapoi, and was taken to the Christchurch Central Police station. He will appear in the Magistrate’s Court this morning on a charge of assault.
