EDEN PARK GROUND

Waikari Soil To Be Used Waikari soil from North Canterbury will be used in an effort' to improve the cricket pitch area of the main ground at Eden Park, Auckland. The trust board has ordered two tons of the soil. The soil will be mixed with loam In the proportion of one-to-three and laid down in the form of a cricket pitch at the number three ground soon after its arrival. When the reaction of the soil to Auckland’s climate has been studied. a decision will be made as to whether it will be used on the main oval. In recent years Port Albert soil has been used at Eden Park but, although it has good wearing qualities, it is very docile and gives little help to the bowlers. In addition, it becomes very puggy in wet weather. Waikari soil was recommended because of the success of the Lancaster Park nitch since it was laid with Waikari. On its own the Waikari soil also proved to be puggy but the experiment of mixing it with loam has been successful.
