TROTTING BATTLEFIELD COULD WIN AT ASHBURTON

Battlefield will be confidently supported to gain his third win for the season in the Elgin Handicap at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s spring meeting today. Battlefield won most convincingly at Methven last week, following on a third behind Local John and Happy Ending at the New Brighton meeting a week earlier.

A fonr-year-old by Light Brigade from Ingle Belmer, Battlefield is trained at Templeton by C. C. Devine for Mr P. A. Watson, of Methven. He looks as though he will develop fine staying handicap form later on. Highland Raider, another four-year-old, will also be trying for his third win of the season. He finished second to Battlefield at Greymouth, won later the same night, finished fourth in the race won by Local John at Addington, and won at Methven.

Highland Raider, by Morano from Tradition, is trained at Prebbleton by D. P. Grice. He has plenty of ability, but is not always too reliable at the start. He will again be driven by R. Young and should be capable of extending Battlefield.

Kinsella was in trouble at Methven last week and her failure can be overlooked. She looks to be close to worthwhile form and could be a sound prospect. Dieppe, a winner at Hutt Park last Saturday, failed on Tuesday night. The Local Light mare could again be prominent. Johnny Warrior started the season with a third in the race won by Dulcie Mae at Methven last week. One of his placings last season was a third to Maggie Spangler and Anterior In this event He could again earn some of the stake.

Trudy Helen, Cloudage and Adios Anne were among the horses to be badly checked at

the straight entrance at Methven last week. All three look to be close to worth-while form and they could add interest to the finish. The double will be run on the Ashburton Flying Stakes and the President’s Handicap, Caimbrae and Flying Over forming a likely combination. Fine weather is forecast and the track will be in good order.
