UNIVERSITY VACANCIES MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA. APPOINTMENT OF FIRST PROFESSORS APPLICATIONS are Invited for appointment to the first Chairs established in the University. Applicants should submit their curriculum vitae together with the names of three referees, and the date on which they would be able to take up duty. Salary for the positions will be £4595 (Australian) per annum plus cost of living adjustments (at present £42 (Australian) per annum) and will be subject to superannuation deductions, but may be subject to review In the near future. The successful applicant may elect to contribute either to the New South Wales State Superannuation Scheme or to an F.S.S.U.tvpe of superannuation scheme. There will be provision for sabbatical leave and long service leave. A Staff Members' Housing Scheme will be established and in cases approved bv the University and its bankers, married men may be assisted by loans to purchase a house. The University plans to commence graduate and undergraduate teaching on the cam. pus at North Ryde. Sydney, at the beginning of 19<7, and to firovlde for the enrolment of 0.000 undergraduates within a period of ten years thereafter It Is envisaged that there will be four main components in the academic structure of the University. These will be: A. A College of Graduate Studies. B. An Undergraduate College of Arts and Sciences. C. An organisation for Parttime and External studies. D. Professional schools, for example, of Medicine and Agriculture. As yet no professional schools have been planned. This advertisement relates to responsibilities under the first three headings. The Council envisages the award of three sorts of first degree:—

(!) A Bachelor's degree at honours standard, allowing considerable concentration in a subject or related group of subjects studied at a high level. (11) A specialist pass Bachelor's degree akin to the honours degree in respect of concentration but taken at a somewhat lower level. (til) A General Studies pass Bachelor's degree in which the student's work is spread over a wider range of studies than in (1) and (11) with the aim not of producing for example a Chemist, or Historian, a Physicist or an Economist, but a broadly educated person who might enter administration, teaching, librarianship, journalism, etc. The initial organisation of studies will be in schools. These schools will not be as broad in their scope as those which have been established in some other new universities The Intended scope of schools at Macquarie University Is indicated in the following tentative division: — I. Mathematics and Physics. 1. Chemistry, Biochemistry. >. Biological Sciences. 4. Earth Sciences and Soil Sciences. I. English Studies. 4. Historical Studies, including Philosophy and Political Sciences. T. Foreign Languages. 5. Classical Studies. 9. Economle and Financial Studies. 10. Behavioural Social Sciences (Psychology, An. thropology and Sociology). 11. Educational Studies. The University looks for applicants who will be interested in participating in the planning of its activities within the structure stated above. It will commence by filling chairs ever the range of the following disciplines —Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English, History, Economics and Psychology. Applications are invited within each.
