PROMOTION OF INDUSTRY
Chamber Seeks Discussions The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce decided on Thursday evening to seek discussions with the Christchurch City Council, Waimairi County Council and Paparua County Council on promoting the establishment of industry in Christchurch. In a report, Mr R. C. Neville said the chamber should assess the natural disadvantages existing in Canterbury and put forward some suggestions on how they could be counteracted. He said incentives, such as reduced power charges, low rates and the availability of rental property would help entice industry to Christchurch. Mr Neville said manufacturers seemed too keen on owning their own land, and that in many cases the availability of leasehold land would prove a cheaper proposition.
Mr J. Roysmith said the land question must be discussed with local bodies because there were certain restrictions on what local bodies could do. For example they could not offer lower rates as an attraction to a company when another company already on neighbouring land would be paying higher rates. Mr Roysmith said some legislative changes were possible there.
