LEPER PATIENT’S PAINTINGS
An exhibition of 49 landscape paintings by Semisi Maya, on display at Hay’s, Ltd.,, was opened by Sir James Hay.
The paintings were brought to New Zealand by the Lepers’ Trust Board, for Semisi Maya has been crippled by leprosy and was taught to paint at St. Elizabeth’s Home, the leper rehabilitation depot, near Suva. The hands and arms of the artist are extremely crippled. He uses his knuckles, the back of his wrists, and the hairs of his forearms to produce his, paintings. One of his paintings is on exhibition at the New York World Fair.
The paintings will be displayed throughout the South Island. They are for sale and the net proceeds will go to the artists. Sales of his paintings are his only source of income.
