Stumped
(From Oar Own Reporter) WESTPORT, Oct. 2. Westport Borough Council workmen, improving the drainage system on the playing field on Victoria square have encountered a small underground forest The excavations In the middle of the area had not gone far when three very thick branches of a rata tree and some stumps were revealed. Their withdrawal left ■ very large and deep hole. It Is felt that similar obstacles may be encountered in other sections, making any full-scale drainage work expensive. The reserve, which was laid out 70 years ago. Is used extensively by most Buller sporting bodies. It is hoped the adjustments will be made for the opening of the cricket season on October 17.
