SMOKE IN LINWOOD
Approach To Railways (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, October 2. Mr N. E. Kirk, member of Parliament for Lyttelton, has ask the district mechanical engineer of the Railways Department (Mr W. J. Watkins) for action to abate the smoke nuisance in the vicinity of the locomotive depot at Linwood. Mr Watkins has replied that the attention of staff has been drawn to the need for care in firing locomotives and stationary boilers to eliminate, as far as possible, the discharge of excessive smoke. Mr Kirk complained that the nuisance came from a donkey boiler and Was persistent to a degree a tolerant by-law would not permit Some houses in the area were a mess, he said.
