Reported Plan For Joint Naval Force

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) KUALA LUMPUR, October 2. Britain, Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia will form a joint naval task force to patrol Malaysian waters against possible Indonesian attacks, the “Malayan Times” said today.

Without giving its source, the English-language daily said in its main story that the joint force would be “closely in touch” with the U.S. Seventh Fleet, “although the United States is not directly involved.” The report said emphasis would be placed on anti-sub-marine defence because “It is feared Indonesia might try to land a force by submarine.” A Defence Ministry spokesman declined to confirm the report in full but said it would not be inaccurate to presume there was some naval co-ordination between Malaysia and its chief Commonwealth allies.
