Thousands of people have fled inland from the low-lying Gulf of Mexico shore before the slow, relentless approach of the monster hurricane Hilda and its 150-mile-an-hour winds. More than 30,000 people took shelter last night and today on higher ground in Louisiana and the extreme east coast of Texas, as weathermen began predicting that one of the greatest gulf storms in history would rip ashore between the Texas border and the mouth of the Mississippi below New Orleans.
