Stablemates Sprint Fast At Riccarton

Hushaway, Shipmate, and Standout, three winners for J. C. Tomkinson’s Riccarton stable at Trentham last season, will be campaigned at the Wellington spring meeting. Everglades, a winner at the Ashburton spring meeting, will be a fourth member of the team to race at Trentham.

Standout and Hushaway were two of the fastest trialists in the limited amount of fast work done at Riccarton yesterday. Assisted by a strong northwesterly in the straight, they ran half a mile on terms in 48 l-ssec. Raised The Dust A. J. Stokes rode Standout, and Hushaway was ridden by F. H. Skelton. Most of the galloping was done on the outside of the trial grass which, though being used for the first time this season, was dusty in places. Standout was a winner in the Tomkinson colours at the last Wellington Cup meeting, and Hushaway won the Thompson Handicap on the same course in March. Not Hurried Shipmate, which is being prepared for open sprints at Trentham, yesterday ran half

a mile easily in 51 3-ssec with A. J. Stokes up. He took a second and a-half longer than Everglades (same rider) for the distance, but was never near full stretch. Boundless was going keenly in the hands of his trainer, J. R. Shaw, finishing half a mile in 49 2-ssec. Though he had wind assistance in the straight there was much to admire in his effort to run his last three furlongs in a shade better than 36sec, Boundless might be taken north for the Tui Gold Cup at Masterton, but a decision will not be made until the weights appear early next week. Royal Bid (F. H. Skelton) worked away easily from the mile and was allowed to quicken for the last half-mile. He recorded 51 l-ssec. Thriving Royal Bid’s winning run in the Geraldine Cup appears to

have done him nothing but good. All going well he will have his next race in the Wainui Handicap at Trentham. Benefice (Swanson) ran half a mile in 52sec, and his stablemate, Magic Ring (Collins) followed in 49 3-ssec. Lady York (A. H. Eastwood) recorded 50 l-ssec, the final three furlongs in 37 l-ssec. Foxy Boy (Wild.ermoth) and Mastiff (Collins) sprinted from the half-mile in 49 4-ssec. This was Mastiff’s first gallop after a spell. Foxy Boy, which was eased after the Grand National meeting, will race next at the North Canterbury meeting. Status Symbol (Collins) and Barwood (Swanson) were paired for half a mile, run in 50 l-ssec. Zinder (Stokes) and Clipper (Collins) recorded Imin 48 l-ssec for their mile. They did not work up to much

pace early, but spurted from the half-mile in 49 3-ssec. The plough, which could have done with some watering, was not in demand. Valuate (W. Martin), one of the few to be tried on this track, ran seven furlongs in Imin 32 2-ssec. Joined by Navarro (Daly) after two furlongs, he ran the final three furlongs in 38sec.
