TROTTING Flying Over Could Win Ashburton Second Leg

Flying Over, a sprint winner at Methven last Saturday, looks handily placed to extend his record in the two-mile President’s Handicap, the second leg of the double at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s spring meeting tomorrow. Flying Over is a sound stayer, having won over two miles on the course last December.

Flying Over showed gameness when he won at Methven last week, his win following on two sound efforts earlier in the season. He has drawn badly, but the distance of the race should help him overcome this disadvantage.

Why Not and Dominica might be the hardest for Flying Over to beat. Why Not has had a chance to freshen up since she raced last at Addington on September 5. She recorded a pleasing effort at the Methven trials on Tuesday and will have to show very little improvement to take a prominent part in the finish. Dominica has paced two fair races this season, her best effort being a fifth in the fast run two-mile race won by Turbulence on the first day of the national meeting. Dominica went well at the Methven trials on Tuesday and if she repeats that effort, she could make an overdue return to winning form. Strip, which has recorded two fourths and a fifth from three starts this season, appeals most of the others on the front. If the pace is slack early. It will not surprise if one or two of the horses on 36 yards finish close up. Happy Sam showed improvement on some of his recent efforts when he won at the Methven trials. He could be close to the good form he showed last season. Aiblins and Carver Doon, fourth and fifth respectively over 13 furlongs at Addington a fortnight ago, are other sound stayers capable of a bold showing. Aiblins won this race 12 months ago after starting from 12 yards. The Ashburton Flying Stakes will be the first leg of ■ the double. This race has; drawn a large and very open; field. Cairnbrae, Lordship I

and Vanderford form a likely trio, but there is expected to be extremely strong opposition for all three of them. Fine weather is forecast and the track will be hard and fast. 1 p.m.— ASHBURTON FLYING STAKES, £1300; 2:11 class; Ijm.
