Average Prices Drop At Aberdeen Angus Sale

J. R. Fraser, a well-known breeder from Pleasant Point, had a field day at the New Zealand Aberdeen Angus Cattle Breeders’ Association’s annual South Island bull show and sale held at the Addington saleyards yesterday.

Cattle from his stud took the top price of lOOOgns, the champion bull of the show award, the challenge cup for the best led bull, the challenge cup for the best unled bull, the top average of the sale and the second highest price in the unled two-year-old bull section.

However, other breeders did not fare so well as in previous years and the sale, although the top price was better than that realised for some time, produced an average price of 169.18gn5-25.32gns 25.32gns below last year’s average of 194.5gn5. This year’s average for the 104 bulls sold (72.2 per cent of the offering), was also well below the 1962 average price of 183gns. Individual breeders also showed marked declines in the average prices realised for their entries, with one prominent breeder dropping 92.1gns on last year’s average price.

In spite of the generally lower note of the sale, Mr Fraser’s average price for yesterday’s sale at 320gns for 13 bulls, was slightly above the best average of last year —that of F. F. Wilding (Hundaiee), who last year averaged 313gns for 21 bulls and this year, 220.9gns for' 22 bulls. The sale began on a very firm note, with the top price of the day being realised on the first auction when Mr Fraser’s led yearling bull, Jubu of Stern, was sold. Representative sales made, with buyers' names in parenthesis, were:— Buyers Selective Entries in the led bull section were not large, only four of the eight offered finding a buyer at auction Mr Fraser sold another yearling bull for 430gns and Alan Grant (Waimate), a led yearling for 450gns. The top priced bull was purchased by Dalgety and New Zealand Loan, Ltd., on account of H. Bayly, Wairoa. For the first 29 lots of the unled bulls there were no passings and prices were quite good. The top price in this section of the sale was achieved quite early on when a Te Mania bull of F. F. Wilding was bought for 445gns by L. P. Chapman. Mount Somers. The next highest price In this section of 410gns was paid by Mount Peel Station (Rangitata), for Mr J. R. Fraser’s prize winning entry, Euripus 34th of Stern.

As the sale progressed, more passings became apparent. However, prices of more than 200gns were realised till quite late on in the sale and transactions were still being made at auction right until the end. There was a tendency for buyers to be selective but good quality stock in good forward condition usually attracted a bid from a widely representative buying gallery. For most of the sale, the auction was attended by a strong gallery and sales were made to the North Island and all parts of the South Island. The sale drew entries from as far south as Southland and as far north as Nelson.

The very dry weather in recent months throughout most of the South Island, was probably one of the causes for the weaker market. Including two led bulls. J. R Fraser averaged 320gns for his 13 entries, with the 11 unled bulls averaging 248gns. F. F. Wilding s Te Mania bulls were again in demand and the 22 offered averaged 220.9gn5. Other good averages Included six unled bulls sold by E. P. Robins (Kelso). at 173.3gn5: Roberts and Company. Gladbrook Estate, Middlemarch, which sold eight unled bulls at an average price of lfifi.2s gns; A. Grant (Walmate), who averaged 240gns for four bulls and I'Ogns for the three unled bulls included in his entry; T. A. Thompson, Cottesbrook. Middlemarch whose four unled bulls averaged lS2.sgns: G. A. and G. D. Rountree (Alford Forest). who sold six bulls at an average price of 138.4gn5; 133 gns for five bulls from A. L. Ferguson. Ltd. ■ Seddon) and 130 gns for four bulls from K. H Hargreaves, of Geraldine. Results of the show, held Immediately before the sale, were: Pyne. Gould. Guinness Challenge Cup for the best led bull, J. R.
