Teen-age Table-Setters
A teen-age tablesetting competition, held by Hay’s in association with the American teen - age magazine “Seventeen,” was won by a team from Christchurch Girls’ High School with a table set for a dinner party for a debutante.
The contest, which was judged yesterday, was open to all secondary and intermediate schools and youth groups, each of which was represented by a team of four girls between the ages of 13 and 19 years. There were 14 entries in the competition. “Seventeen” magazine awarded special sterling silver medallions to the winners of the competition and Hays presented cash prizes amounting to £5O to the first three place-winners. The money is to be given to a charity nominated by the winning teams.
The Christchurch Girls’ High School team will donate its money to cancer research. The second prize went, to Christchurch Technical College for a table set for an
international night with the guest of honour a Colombo Plan student. Its prize money will be divided between the New Zealand Institute for the Blind and the children sponsored by the school through the Save the Children Fund. Third prize was won by a
team from Heaton Intermediate School with a table set for a Parliamentary farewell dinner with the guest of honour, Sir Winston Churchill. Their money will be given to help families the school sponsors. Winning Teams Members of the winning teams were as follows: Christchurch Girls’. High School: Gillian Milne, Anne Grigor, Dianne Wilson and Alison Guild. Christchurch Technical College: Marilyn Sharp, Heather Miller, Ellen Lawrence and Kathryn Parsons. Heaton Intermediate School: Jane Pearson, Alison Crosbie and Norma Marriot. Apart from the official judging the public will be given a chance to judge the tables, which are displayed in the city store. A voting paper can be purchased and the public can cast votes for the tables. The money raised will be distributed to the school or group represented by the first, second and third tables chosen, and this money will be given to charities nominated by the groups.
