SHIPPING FREIGHTS
Chamber To Hold Talks (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 1. The president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce (Mr T. N. Rodgers) will shortly hold a discussion on shipping freight rates with Sir John Onnond, chairman of a joint producer boards’ committee. This comes after the move by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce for a New Zealand group to negotiate freight rates with the conference and other shipping lines. At present the rates are negotiated by the Londonbased Australian and New Zealand Merchant Shippers’ Association, which the Auckland chamber feels is not a properly representative body. It has been suggested that the only reason this association negotiates the inward freight rates is because there is no group to take its place.
The discussion between Mr Rodgers and Sir John Ormond is aimed at having the associated chambers of commerce included in any future freight rate negotiations (preferably in New Zealand) as the representative of the New Zealand firms involved in the freight charges on goods shipped here from the United Kingdom and Europe. Discussion on the possibility of a revision of the basis of calculation of freight rates by the conference lines is also likely.
