ANTARCTIC BURSARY

Two Students Share The first bursary provided by the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Antarctic Society is to be shared by Messrs J. Hay and G. Yeates, honours students at the University of Canterbury. Both will take part in the University of Canterbury’s programme of biological studies at Cape Royds, on Ross Island, this season. They will be in the Antarctic for about four months. The value of the bursary is £l2O. It was meant to finance only one student but because both were keen and qualified the selection panel found it difficult to decide between them. Mr Hay, an honours student in geography, will establish climatological stations at Cape Royds on the site of Shackleton’s hut. In addition to studying the effects of weather on penguins and seals he will study microclimates in ponds, mosses, and other small areas.

Mr Yeates, an honours student in zoology, will continue the Adelie penguin studies and begin investigations of nematode parasites of several Antarctic species, their life cycles, and alternate hosts for them.

The Canterbury branch of the society now has about £3OO for bursary purposes—enough for two seasons. Although its appeal for funds to city business houses is no longer being pressed, donations are still being received. The sale of special Christmas cards with an Antarctic motif is expected to yield more funds.
