MOUNT COOK GATHERING
Mountaineers’ Anniversary More than 60 adults and 20 children will attend an informal social at the Hermitage this week-end to mark the fortieth year of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club. The social is an annual event organised by the Erewhon branch of the club, but this year it has been widened to include all members who wish to attend. Some of the members will arrive at the Hermitage this evening and leave on Monday. The majority will arrive on Saturday and leave on Sunday about noon. The main function will be a dinner at the Hermitage on Saturday evening followed by cabaret entertainment. Those attending will stay at the Wyn Irwin Club Hut, Thar Lodge, the Hermitage and motels. Most famous members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club include Sir Edmund Hillary, Harry Ayers, John Pascoe, Norman Hardie and George Harrow. Club memmers have climbed in the Himalayas, the Andes, Peru, New Guinea, and Australia. The club has 19 huts in the South Island. Mr G. McElroy, a wellknown guide on the West Coast glaciers before the Second World War, will attend the reunion. The club president, Mr C. E. Fenwick, and Mrs Fenwick, will be present.
