The Canterbury under 18 soccer team, the national champion, is off to Australia this evening to represent New Zealand in the inter-state youth tournament at Adelaide, from October 9-12. The Canterbury players won the right to be New Zealand’s entry in the tournament after they won the Junior National Cup. It will be the first solely provincial side to play in an overseas tournament. The team held its final prac-
tice match on Wednesdayunder flood lights, when it heat the senior team, Rangers, 5-2. The Canterbury team will be in Group B with Victoria, its stiffest hurdle, and Tasmania. The other groups are: A.—New South Wales, Western Australia and Queensland: C.—Northern New South Wales, South Australia and A.C.T. Canterbury’s first game will be against Victoria at 9.20 p.m. on the evening of Friday, October 9, and it will next play Tasmania on the
following morning. The winners of each group will then play each other, for a trophy presented by the Australian Soccer Federation. The team will travel to Sydney by air, and then to Adelaide by train, with a stop at Melbourne. It will arrive in Adelaide next Wednesday, with three days to prepare for its first game. The team will be managed by Mr R. Storer and captained by A. W. Gowans, the righthalf who has also played in all of Canterbury’s senior re-
