Russia To Supply Arms To Cyprus
(N.Z P.A. -Reuter—Copyright)
MOSCOW, October 1. The Soviet Union and Cyprus yesterday signed an agreement on Russian military assistance. Mr Andreas Araouzos, the Cyprus Commerce Minister, told Reuter the agreement included weapons, but he declined to reveal any details.
Mr Araouzos had been negotiating with Soviet officials for a fortnight. He was joined in Moscow last Saturday by Mr Spyros Kyprianou, the Cyprus Foreign Minister, who signed yesterday’s agreement. Mr Kyprianou said no details of the agreement would be made public. “There were no strings attached and no conditions whatsoever,” he said. The Soviet Union had expressed full support for the Cyprus political position. A top Cyprus Foreign Ministry official declined to comment when asked if Soviet arms assistance would include anti-aircraft weapons.
Western observers in Moscow thought it likely the agreement would include ground-to-air missiles but doubted whether any military aircraft were involved. The Cyprus delegation will leave for home today.
