DESERTERS’ FRIENDS
Two Girls Charged (N.Z. Press Association) SYDNEY, Sept 29. Two teen-age girls appeared in Grafton (Northern New South Wales) children’s court yesterday as a sequel to four American naval deserters’ recent, “holiday” in Yamba, a north coast beach resort. The deserters were from the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Enterprise. The girls, charged with having been exposed to moral danger, were each placed on three years’ probation. One girl is 15 and the other 17. They were taken into custody after being found in a flat at Yamba with the four American seamen. Police told the court one girl had met the sailors in Sydney while visiting Enterprise and had gone to live with them in a flat in Sydney. She travelled by train with them to Yamba and had lived with them for two weeks. She had told her parents she was going on holiday. The other girl had also visited Enterprise in Sydney and was returning home when she met the sailors on the train and decided to go with them to Yamba.
