CHEAPER SKIS
Swiss Plan For N.Z. (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 30. Heavy customs duties and the need to obtain import licences are crippling the advance of competitive skiing in New Zealand, said the manager of the visiting Swiss Olympic skiers, Mr Walter Haensli. He has proposed a scheme by which the New Zealand Ski Association would import, at cost price and free from duty, 80 pairs of skis a year. These could be distributed to selected competitive skiers at one quarter of the price they pay now—£ls a pair as against the £6O. Mr Haensli said be was certain that ski manufacturers in both Europe and the United States would provide skis at cost price, as they do for A grade racing skiers elsewhere in the world.
