Rowers Critical Of Insurance Rates
The discovery that no insurance had been arranged to cover the Canterbury Rowing Association’s new £620 eightoar boat which represents two-thirds of the association’s assets gave rise to concern at the annual meeting last evening. The matter was raised by Mr J. Wylie, an Avon delegate, who said that some insurance should be arranged. Mr W. G. Richards, a vicepresident disagreed. "The money would be thrown away. Insurance companies grow fat on people who insure from fear of damage,’’ he said. Clubs had had very few pay-outs from insurance companies on damaged plant over the years. He did, however, feel that fire insurance cover should be arranged. Another vice-president, Mr A. H. Gould, said that he did not think the association could afford to go without insurance for the eight. The meeting agreed to recommend to the incoming executive that it look into temporary coverage for the eight when the boat was travelling to and from regattas.
