Population
Sir, —Mr Bray’s first statement in his last letter is obviously incorrect. It is doubtful if half the working population of even the western world is making offensive goods. All capitalists are not necessarily in collusion internationally and we have cause to remember some with gratitude, i.e., Nobel, Ford, Carnegie, Nuffield, and Kennedy. And they are no more responsible for man’s propensity to warfare than are advertisers for his sexual appetite; both merely exploit these characteristics. The slight drop in fertility if proper nutrition became universal would be more than offset by the decrease in mortality. To compare New Zealand’s birth-rate with that of India is laughable when the widespread use of birth-coritrol methods in this country is considered. Feeding the population without controlling the birth-rate will obviously aggravate the problem and indeed make this insoluble to your correspondent in the future:—Yburs, etc., D. BROWN. September 29, 1964.
