Christchurch College For Sale

With the prospect of tenders being called by the end of the year for the new Christchurch College (College House) on the Ilam campus of the University of Canterbury, the city property of the college is for sale. It occupies about an acre and a quarter bounded by Cashel street, Rolleston avenue, and Hereford street, excluding a private house on the corner of Hereford street and the avenue. Mr D. W. Bain, bursar to the college, confirmed yester-

day that the Board of Governors was now receiving offers as a prelude to arranging the transfer to Ilam. The architects (Messrs Warren and Mahoney) had virtually completed working drawings for the new college at Ham which would be on the Waimairi road frontage of the university campus between two branches of the upper Avon river, Mr Bain said. The new college would accommodate 120 residents compared with 75 at present. The present Christchurch College is one of the most extensive properties to come on the market for some years. There is a two-storey wooden building known as Chichele House in Hereford street and this might be closed if a buyer wanted early possession, Mr Bain said. However the rest of the college would be retained until *

the new one was ready for occupation. Other houses of the college are: Stanford, wood and brick, on Rolleston avenue; Wilford, wood, on Cashel street; Watts-Russell, threestorey brick, in the middle of the property. Mr Bain said the board expected to get soon the support of the University Grants Committee for the full Government subsidy offered for the provision of halls of residence. Tenders could be called and a contract let by the end of this year.

“The aim is to open the new Christchurch College at Ilam in 1966.” said Mr Bain.

Mr R. A. Wilkinson, who has retired as president of the Sydenham Businessmen s Association, was presented with a travelling case by the association.
