PROGRESS ON SHED
Contractors Criticised Disappointment was expressed by the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday on the slow progress by the contractor on the first of the transit sheds on the eastern extension. Up to four or five months ago the shed could have been completed on time with an effort, the engineer-in-chief (Mr 1 J. A. Cashin) said. “Now there is no hope whatever,” he said. “How far behind it is depends on how much effort the contractors put into it. They seem to be making little or no effort to meet a reasonable date. “I would not like to make a guess for publication,” he replied when asked if he could estimate a finishing time. A large part of the shed would be finished for the opening on November 28, the chairman (Mr A. A. Macfarlane) said. “We have never had a better winter, so they certainly can’t blame the weather for holding them up,” he added. To Mr J. Brand, Mr Cashin said the penalty was £5O a day. “How long do we have to wait to get the building free?” Mr Brand asked. The board should write to the contractor expressing disappointment at the inaction and saying that the penalty would be enforced, Mr L. G. Amos said. Mr Macfarlane: The engineer is writing regularly. Mr Amos: Well make it official from the board.
