Obituary

MR E. S. VELVIN A former Canterbury and New Zealand champion oarsman, Mr Ernest Sturrock Velvin, of St. Andrews Hill, died recently. He was aged about 68. A prominent competitor in rowing regattas before and after World War I—during which he served with the Ist N.Z.E.F. Mounted Rifles—Mr Velvir enjoyed success in double sculls and pair and four-oar events. In association with A. S. Drayton he achieved considerable prominence in rowing. After Mr Drayton’s retirement Mr Velvin teamed with T. Grenfell to win the national pair oar championship a* Picton. He was patron of the Christchurch Regatta Club and a well-known member of the Union Rowing Club. Mr Velvin was also prominent as a Free Mason and was a past master of the Canterbury Lodge and an officer of the District Grand Lodge. He is survived by his wife and daughter.
