Ship’s First Visit
The City of Philadelphia, which Is on her first visit to Lyttelton, is discharging part of a general cargo of 900 tons at the port. This ship usually trades between South Africa and the United Kingdom, but because of a lack of cargo vessels, and an abundance of cargo, she was placed on the South Pacific shipping routes. Her crew of 80 Includes 59 Indians from Bombay and Karachi who serve as deck hands for periods of 18 months with vessels of the Ellerman Line. The City of Philadelphia was built in 1949 at Haverton Hill and her home port is Liverpool. Her master is Captain R. K. Walker. After discharging the remainder of her cargo, including some earthmoving equipment, at Dunedin, the 7591 ton vessel will sail empty for Tasmania. She will leave Lyttelton tonight.
