Rise In Private Import Payments

WELLINGTON, September 29. A slight increase can be expected in the payments made by private firms for imports, the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker) announced last night.
Provided the lag between orders and payments is the same as in earlier years, and surveyed firms—which cover just over half of private imports—represent the same proportion of orders and payments, then it can be expected private import payments will average £26.2 million a month from September to November, 1964, falling slightly to £23.5 million a month from December, 1964. to February, 1965. However, the corresponding figures for a year earlier, £25.9 million and £22.6 million respectively, show an increasing trend in private import payments. Orders placed overseas in August, 1964, were valued at
£14.2—.1 higher than for the same month last year. This minor increase is reflected in a similar trend for the six months ended August, 1964, when overseas orders amounted to £85.5 million, an increase of .3 on the orders placed in the same period last year—£Bs.2. Payments made by the surveyed firms in the last six months ended August, 1964, amounted to £77.0 million, an increase of 7 per cent on last year’s payments.
