DEACONESS ADMITTED
N.Z. Revival Of Order
fN.Z. Press Association) I AUCKLAND, September 29. Mrs Kathleen Lyons, of Epsom, this morning became the first woman to be admitted to the order of deaconess in the Auckland diocese since the Anglican general synod gave its sanction for the ordination of women as deaconesses last April. The Rev. Canon A. C. F. Charles, speaking at the ceremony in St. Andrew’s Church, Epsom, said that the revival of the order of deaconess taking place now in New Zealand had happened over 100 years ago in England. “In today’s environment the deaconess is discovering, and will continue to discover, new and very significant modes of service and opportunities of developing the lay service of women—especially the young women—within the church and in the community,” he said. Teacher Resigns.—The resignation of the head of the science department at Christchurch Girls’ High School, Miss R. M. Anderson, was received with regret by a meeting of the board of governors on Monday. Miss Anderson has been nearly 25 years with the school. Board members paid tribute to the work she had done for the school.
