Back From U.S. With Her Bicycle
“Someone told me it was like taking oil to Texas to bring a bicycle to Christchurch,” said Miss Donna Hahn, who arrived from the United States on Saturday, complete with her own bicycle.
“My friends almost threw me out w T hen they found I had brought a bike with me,” she said yesterday. “But it’s cute, with white-wall tyres, dip-beam headlight—the lot. I’m kind of attached to it.” Nineteen-year-old Miss Hahn is no stranger to Christchurch. She enjoyed many a bicycle ride on fine days during the two years her father was stationed here as public information officer with the United States Antarctic naval suport force The family returned to the United States 18 months ago. Since their return, the Hahns have been living on Long Island, and Miss Hahn, who completed her schooling at Rangi-ruru Girls’ College, has been working in the foreign section of a bank on Park avenue, Manhattan. No, she had not ridden her bicycle in Manhattan, “but it’s more in the country where we live on Long Island, and I did there.” In the bank, New Zealand clients and accounts were always her particular interest. Finally, she decided to revisit Christchurch, and has come back on a working holiday. “My visa is for six months, but I can renew it if I want to. I don’t know how long I will stay, yet,” she said. This trip she plans to see more of the North Island,
which she missed when living here. “I also very much want to go to Australia,” said Miss Hahn. Her parents had thought it was a “marvellous idea” for her to come back to New Zealand. “They were peagreen with envy. We liked Christchurch a lot,” she said. “It’s the people that bring you back.”
