INSPECTORS OF HEALTH

Council Told Of Shortage A shortage of staff has caused the Department of Health to reorganise the duties of its health Inspectors. The Lyttelton Borough Council was told in a letter from the department that the inspector who in the past worked in the borough on two days a week, would in future work only one. “While this move is regretted, it is, unfortunately unavoidable,” the letter said. The department suggested the council might consider employing its own health inspector, either solely or in conjunction with other local authorities, or sponsor a trainee. The matter was referred to the health and sanitation committee. Progress League Grant.—A grant of £lO was made to the Canterbury Progress League. Theatre Sprinklers.—A request from the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board asking the council to amend its by-laws to provide for sprinkling systems to be installed in theatres was referred to the by-laws committee for consideration.

Smoke-free District— The Department of Health advised that the borough would be gazetted as a district under the Smoke Regulations.
