World Forestry Congress Plans

(New Zealand Press Association) ROTORUA, September 28. New Zealand will probably be wellrepresented at the sixth World Forestry Congress in Madrid in 1966.

Mr A. L. Poole, New Zealand’s Director-General of Forests, said in Rotorua today he thought New Zealand should send two delegates to the congress. He would also ensure the forest industries were kept informed in the hope that there would be good trade representation. He hoped, also, that New Zealand’s Minister of Forests at the time could be one of the country’s representatives. Mr Poole was commenting after the congress had been discussed at the seventh session of the Asia-Pacific Forestry Commission in Rotorua.

Mr L. J. Vernell, the Food and Agricultural Organisation representative, told delegates that, although topics were not yet decided, they would probably include world trends in timber consumption, the use of forest potential, institutional work for forestry development and the financing of forestry development. Reliable Reports It was proposed that an expert panel of eight to 10 persons would be set up for each of the subjects. • Before the congress, probably towards the end of 1965,

an appraisal of world forestry would be published. This summary, at present being collated through regional forestry surveys, would ensure the congress would be based on very reliable statistics and economic information. Study tours probably would be organised to take in France, Portugal,. Morocco and other countries, as well as Spain itself.
