Save The Children Fund Director To Visit
The director-general of the| London headquarters of the ; Save the Children Fund.! Brigadier T. W. Boyce, will ! visit Christchurch in March' next year, it was reported to! a meeting of the North Can-! terbury branch of the fund. ! During Brigadier Boyce’s i stay of one week in the city i the fund will hold its Do-! minion conference, delegates i and observers attending from the 16 New Zealand branches. Her Excellency Lady Fergusson will open the conference. The annual Rice Bowl Anpeal will be held in North Canterbury from October 231 to October 30, and members! were asked to help. It was also announced that the pack- i ing centre and Christmas I cards centre of the fund would be at the Blackwell j Motors building, and the firm was thanked for providing the space. It was reported Mrs M. B. Warren and Miss M. C. Havelaar had recently been to Greymouth to attend the forma-! tion of a local branch of the ; Save the Children Fund sponsored bv the Grevmouth Rot| ary Club. This brought the | number of New Zealand j branches of the fund to 16. I In 1963-64 the branches! and their sub-branches con- 1 tributed £80,961 Is 8d to the fund, expenses amounting to £372 0s lOd. The meeting was told of serious floods in South Korea, and of the large number of families which had been] made homeless and required i help. The plight of children In Crete was also discussed.!
and it was pointed out thal as winter was now approach ing in Greece, Crete anc South Korea it was essentia] action be taken immediately Reports from Korea said that in the floods in the Seoul area at least 212 persons had been killed, 209 others were missing, and about 33,000 had been left homeless. More than 566 houses were de stroyed, and about 6800 inun dated. The storm which caused the floods was the worst for 20 years.
