ACLAND HOUSE
£24,000 For Changes Major work is required to bring Acland House, the hostel of Christchurch Girls’ High School, up to an adequate and satisfactory standard, said a letter from the Education Department received at a meeting of the school’s board of governors. A grant of £24,000 will be made for the work. Permission to employ a private architect had not arrived from the Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella), so it was unlikely that a start would he made before next year, said the secretary (Mr P. J. Halligan). A survey of the hostel showed that dining and common rooms needed extending, dormitory accommodation for 22 girls was required, as was dry food storage and additional refrigeration space; an existing store room would have to be converted into showers and toilets', and a drying room provided for the laundry; a seven-bed upstairs dormitory would be converted into a senior study library. The letter said that to comply with code requirements for dormitory accommodation, the number of beds in the main building would have to be reduced by 13 and by two beds in Stewart wing. The accommodation now planned would provide for about 85 boarders. The letter asked the board not to increase beyond that number as present overcrowded conditions would again prevail.
