OTAGO TO JOIN R.N. FLEET

(N.Z, Press Association—Copyright) SINGAPORE, September 29. The Royal New Zealand Navy’s antisubmarine frigate Otago is scheduled to arrive in a few days to join the British Far East fleet as part of a Commonwealth military build-up to help defend Malaysia against Indonesia*

A Royal Navy spokesman said today the 2144-ton Otago, with a 220-man crew, is equipped with 4.5 in guns, torpedoes, and anti-submarine mortars. The vessel recently was involved in a collision with two American warships at Pearl Harbour. The British fleet now patrolling Malaysian waters has been described as the biggest

complement of British fighting ships anywhere in the world. Two destroyers and two frigates, detached from Mediterranean service, sailed into Singapore last Saturday and, the Navy spokesman said, have since “taken up duties as part of the fleet." The nucleus of the fleet is the aircraft carriers Centaur and Victorious.
