Malawi Rioters Stone Minister

While the police, carrying batons, drove past the stillsmouldering ruins of the party headquarters, groups of Africans stood on street
corners armed with sticks, bottles and bicycle chains. The stoned Minister was Mr G. C. Chakuamba, to whom the Premier, Dr. Hastings Banda, gave the community and social development portfolio after his dramatic Government purge just over a fortnight ago. Last night the Minister was reported seriously ill ip hospital.
The South African Press Association reported that about 30 Africans chased Mr Chakuamba to a house where they stoned him until he was semi-conscious. The police superintendent, Mr Paddy Adair, was injured by stones thrown at him when he got into his car. Dr. Banda alleged in Parliament at the time of the Cabinet crisis that the six Ministers whom he dismissed “would have murdered me in cold blood.” He accused them of conspiring against him with the backing of the Chinese Embassy in Dar-es-Salaam.
