Anxious Moments In Hartford
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) HARTFORD (Connecticut), Sept. 29.
President Johnson’s secret service guards had some anxious moments to-day when he got out of his car and walked for about half a mile through crowds in Providence, Rhode Island. Police detained three youths and a girl found on the roof of a hotel along the route of the
motorcade. But the youngsters, who said they were only looking for a good vantage point, were later released.
The incidents came a few hours after release of the Warren Commission report on President Kennedy’s assassination which referred to the possible security hazards involved in impromptu stops by a Presidential motorcade.
Earlier, President Johnson’s personal physician, Rear - Admiral George Burkely, had to scramble to safety when the limousine in which he was riding two cars behind the President in Providence, burst into flames.
The mishap occurred while the President and his accompanying motorcade were driving through Providence dur-
ing a speaking tour of New England states. The driver also got out safely as the engine went up in a sheet of flame.
Admiral Burkely later caught up with the motorcade after hitching a ride on the back of a policeman’s motor-cycle. THE PICTURE: Photographers leap from the car which carried, also, Admiral Burkely.
