Honours Awards For Surf Men
/THE New Zealand Surf Life-Saving Association’s . honours awards are not bestowed lightly or frequently but at its recent annual conference it saw fit to recognise the work of four, well-known personalities in the . movement, Messrs F. H. Jackson and C. O’Neill (both Canterbury), A. Priest (Taranaki) and K. Mitchell (Wellington). Mr Jackson, who made his last appearance as an officer of the association at the recent annual meeting, has been made a life member. He has worked at national level for the last 25 years, holding the positions of president and • immediate past president in recent years. He entered the movement in Wellington in 1926 as a member of the Maranui club. He is cur-
rently a member' of the Canterbury association as delegate of the Kotuku club (West Coast). The other three all received service awards. Mr Mitchell, the. present convener of the national selection committee, has had a rapid rise to prominence. He has been a member of the Worser- 'Bay club since the 1944-45 season and was first appointed to the New Zealand council in 1953 as a Wellington delegate. Mr O’Neill joined the North Beach club in. 1929 and has been a national judge since 1948. He has been a member of the Canterbury board of . judges since ■ 1945, Canterbury’s chief examiner from 1958 to the present and has a record of instruction with club teams that few persons could equal.
