Christchurch Ate 9m. Oysters
The oyster season ends today. Since March enough oysters came to Christchurch for every man, woman, and child to eat just over three dozen and a half each, or about nine million oysters.
Altogether about 22,000 sacks, the equivalent of about 164 million oysters, were opened by wholesale firms over the last .six months. Of these about 10,000 sacks, or seven million and a half
J oysters, were sent to satisfy i f North Islanders. ; More than half of locally- ’ consumed oysters were caught i 5 by the Kumea, owned by a . Christchurch firm, Fisheries , (South Island), Ltd. Her f catch was more than 6000
sacks—or over four million and a half oysters. Although the Kumea missed the first few days of the season she has ended her first season’s dredging with one of three highest catches of the 18-boat fleet.
