SIGNAL NOT RECOGNISED

Plane-To-Ship Call GV.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 28. The operations manager of the Auckland Aero Club, Mr B. Gault, said today the club was concerned at the apparent lack of knowledge by some launch owners of standard aircraft-to-surface craft signals. He was referring to an incident on the Manukau harbour on Saturday. The signal used by the aero club aircraft on Saturday—circling a launch or fishing boat, flying across its bows while throttling back, then “revving” the engine and flying off in the direction of the disabled yacht—should have been recognised as an emergency call to proceed in the direction the aircraft had taken, he said. "Failure by boat owners to acquaint themselves with approved aircraft signals could cost lives.”
