No Independence
(N.Z.PA.-Reuter— Copyright) SUVA, Sept. 20. Fijians did not want independence from Britain, Semesa Sikivou, a Fijian member told the Legislative Council in Suva. “We do not want independence at all,” Semesa said. Fiji is a British Crown colony. The British Government has been urging elected members of the Legislative Council to accept greater responsibility for governing the colony as a preparatory step towards eventual self-government. Josua Rabukawaqa, another Fijian member, speaking in the council, said: “Let’s face it—we have insufficient. men of the required calibre to make plans to give the people control of their own affairs.”
He said Fiji must learn from other colonies which had achieved “so-called independence.” j
