Sons Of Summertime Gain Further Success

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, Sept. 7. The New Zealand horse, Summer Regent, had his first run since resuming after being brought back from Brisbane and captured the eyes of form students by his fifth in the Tranway Handicap at Randwick on Saturday. His run was not comparable with the performance of Summer Fair, also by Summertime, or of a third son by that sire, Summer Fiesta, but for all that it showed Summer Regent ready to go on with his preparation for the spring. Summer Fair won the Chelmsford Stakes like the good horse that he is and is now a firm fancy for the Metropolitan, his principal mission of the spring. Summer Fiesta won the Spring Handicap, and showed his best form for a considerable period. In Melbourne there was an upset in the Memsie Stakes, the nine-furlong weight-for-age race at Caulfield. In this race Craftsman and Sir Dane, rivals as three-year-olds were under test, and there was only a half-head between them in the finish, the advantage being with Sir Dane. But the winner was W. R. Kemball’s New Zealand-bred Future, the son of Targui and Festive Air. Future was fourth fancy in the field of six, and after following the outsider, Radian Pine, which at one stage was 20 lengths in front, he took charge entering the straight and held off the challenges of the other four-year-olds. He beat Sir Dane by a neck, but Sir Dane was catching him with every stride.

Quite Able Second In Melbourne the Heatherlie Handicap, the distance race on the programme was split up between New Zealand-breds. Gallant Quest, by Marco Polo, won from Quite Able (by Able Seaman) and Delville (by Boissier). Veteran trainer, Doug Webster, turned out another winner on Saturday. This time it was Battling, the son of Cappielluca which won a division of the mile and a half Novice Handicap at Randwick, starting at 15 to 1. Webster .does not often bring a horse across from New Zealand these days, but when he does he never, misses winning a race. Any value in the backing of Farnworth for the Epsom Handicap at Randwick disappeared after bookmakers had altered their charts following the colt's success in the Tramway Handicap on Saturday at Randwick. Those people who had backed the colt before the race may have some cause for satisfaction at the price they got. for the odds now have shrunk considerably. But they also have some cause for concern, since Farnworth just managed the seven furlongs on Saturday, and only just. Increases All-round Racing stakes get bigger and bigger, betting turn-over grows and, in fact, everything but the size of crowds is constantly increasing in the turf round. Figures released by the secretary of the Bloodhorse Breeders’ Association. Alan Dexter, show records in four departments. For the first time a horse with progeny racing only in Australia is at the head of the sires list with more than £160,000 in stakes won by his sons and daughters. Another sire has reached a record aggregate for a stallion in the southern hemisphere. Yet another has set new figures with a first crop to represent him. And the fourth created a record

for the number of Individual winners he had in the season.

Here are the figures of the leaders in the general sires list and in the two-year-old list.

General List

Wilkes and Summertime cleared the £lOO,OOO mark, and Todman, of course, created the record for a first year sire. Once Rejected Smokey Eyes, rejected from a stud in Victoria to be sold to go to Queensland had 80 individual winners in the season, and between them they won 151 races The record aggregate for a sire rests with Star Kingdom, whose total for last year, added to the tally of preceeding seasons brings his total to £641,303. Stakes for the A.J.C. autumn meeting are going to exceed the £lOO,OOO mark for the four days and no race will have less than' £l5OO stake money. The same story applies to all principal clubs in the eastern capital, cities. Another set of records is bound to crop up when the current, season ends, and, as T.A.B. adds to the racing clubs, turnover each year, so will the figures rise. Betting turn-over—a very important part of racing revenue since the imposition of the turn-over tax—is becoming almost frightening to some people closely connected with administration. Hong Kong businessman, Fran

Duval, credited with losing £60,000 the previous Saturday won £50,000 from two bookmakers Len Burke and Les Tidmarsh on Saturday. Bets staking from £lOOO to £5OOO at a time were made—there were more than. 20 of them—as though they meant nothing at all. People who wait round to see the big business seldom even see this mammoth punter, and certainly never head the amount of the investment.

The biggest plunges on Saturday won £30,000 over the last race winner, Hubble Bubble one of George Moore’s four winners. Moore won the last four races on Farnworth, Summer Fair, Summer Fiesta, and Hubble Bubble and the Duval bets were on them with an odd saver or two on other horses. In 42 races so far this season Moore has had 14 winners, nine seconds and 11 thirds—no wonder he is the idol of Sydney’s racing population.
