STRANDED SAILORS
Back To Ships By Launch (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 9. Because conditions in the harbour were too rough for the liberty boats, several hundred men from the U.S.S. Long Beach and Bainbridge were ferried back to their ships early this morning by the eight-ton pilot launch Tiakina. The Tiakina made six trips and also returned a few stragglers to their ships when she took out a pilot just before the ship sailed. Although a few Could be accommodated in the Tiakina’s small cabin and wheelhouse, most of the seamen, many without overcoats, had to stand on deck and endure a 20-minute ride through heavy rain and spray. Large numbers of the men carried souvenirs Maori carvings and spears, as well as parcels and cameras.
