OVERDRAFTS DOWN
Another Fall Is Shown Bank advances were down once again in August, according to the New Zealand Bankers' Association Research Directorate. The average figure and the seasonally corrected figure were both over £4m lower. Though advances are now 5 per cent higher than a year ago, the increase is much less than the estimated increase in gross national expenditure of about 10 per cent. Total credit limits rose by a million pounds in August but this is hardly significant. Cheques cleared in the last four weeks of the month were the same as in the previous month. In August 1963 they showed a substantial fall on the previous month’s figure.
