ASSISTANT URGED
N.Z. Cricket Tours The appointment of an assistant manager for the New Zealand cricket team to tour England next year is to be urged by the Auckland Cricket Association. The chairman of the association’s management committee, Mr G. C. Burgess, told the “New Zealand Herald” that the position had been discussed at the recent Board of Control meeting of the New Zealand Cricket Council but a decision was deferred. Mr Burgess said that the Auckland association decided “some time ago” that an assistant manager would help on the technical side of the tour.
Now, because there will probably be several new players and a visit to India and Pakistan is a possibility, the Auckland association thinks “an experienced man could be a great help to our cricketers in adjusting their game.” The person the Auckland association has in mind is Mr W. M. Wallace, who was vicecaptain of the 1949 team which toured England (the captain was Mr W. A. Hadlee, who will manage the team next year). Mr Wallace also captained and coached New Zealand teams in this country. Mr Burgess said that the appointment of Mr Wallace or someone else qualified for the position would lift a burden off the shoulders of J. R. Reid who, if he is available and is captain of the team, should be able to concentrate on this own performances.
