Progress On Jellie Park Pool
Mr J. D. Olds, senior attendant at the Centennial Pool, has been appointed manager of the Waimairi County Council’s new Lido pool in Jellie Park. Educated at the Christchurch Boys’ High School, Mr Olds, who is 38, has been an attendant at the Centennial Pool for 12 years. He will take up his appointment about three weeks before the new pool is opened. Although the tile work is taking a little longer than
originally planned, it is hoped that the £87,000 project will be completed towards the end of November. The last of the concrete for the four pools was poured last week and the main structural work on the administration block has been completed, leaving only the interior finishing to be done. Tilers were yesterday completing the learners’ pool and ’ once this is done, they will ”. make a start on the diving . pool which is 50 feet by 36 5 feet and lift 6in deep. The i small pool for toddlers has
been completed. Work is. well under way on the concrete block wall at the eastern end of the pools. This Bft wall will provide shelter for 10 picnic cubicles formed by short, decorative block partitions projecting from it.
The amenity and administration buildings will contain changing facilities for 1000 men and 500 women. In addition, a room has been set aside for children of pre-school age to change when in their parents’ charge. A hall of 1000 sq. ft. has
been provided for sports clubs. During the summer months, this will be leased to the Fendalton Swimming Club. At the eastern end of the administration block will be an office for the manager, the professional coach (Mr C. McFadden) and a store, first-aid room and a shop, tenders for which are at present being called by the council. The whole emphasis in planning has been to make a light, bright and attractive building for both staff and bathers.
