6 101 LITTLE DUTIES’

Teachers’ Aid Scheme Provided education boards are satisfied about the need, school committees may now appoint a teachers’ aid for up to 25 hours a week at a rate of 7s 4d an hour. This information has been received by the Canterbury School Committees’ Association in answer to its complaints that school pupils’ savings bank work and other jobs were taking too much of teachers’ time. The association was informed that teachers’ aids were usually married women who sought casual employment. Schools used them for the “hundred and one little duties which take much time with children.” These duties may range from helping children with overcoats in wet weather to attending to sick pupils and doing occasional clerical work.
