NUCLEAR TESTS

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Sept. 9. The Defence Department and the Atomic Energy Commission will next month test how fast they can begin atmospheric nuclear testing again. • A “dry run” will be held near Johnston Island in the Pacific about the middle of October. No nuclear explosives will he used. The check on the state of readiness will include the use of unloaded nuclear weapons; planes and other equipment. The Nuclear Test-ban Treaty signed last year prohibits nuclear testing in the atmosphere; but the United States Senate instructed the two agencies to prepare for swift resumption of atmospheric testing if Russia should abrogate the pact secretly. The agencies have considered how to resume testing within two or three months from abrogation.
