47,000 Scottish Residents In N.Z.

The traditional home of Scots in New Zealand was the far south, but at the 1961 Census both the Wellington and central Auckland statistical areas had more than twice as many Scottish-born residents as the Otago statistical area, the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker) said yesterday. Both Wellington and central Auckland had several times as many Scottish-born residents | as Southland. i However, the percentage of Scottish-born residents was much higher among the smaller population of the two South Island statistical areas. spent 40 years or more in New Zealand. Of the 154,869 who gave England as their birthplace, 34,940 were aged 65 or more and 40,796 had lived in New Zealand for 40 years or more. Just over 14 per cent of the New Zealand population was born overseas. Australians in New Zealand at the census date numbered 35,412, of whom 10,073 were aged 65 or more and 14,648 had spent 40 years or more in New Zealand.
